Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden occupies a specialised precinct within Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria and is conceived as a botanical exploration landscape at child scale. The garden combines water, sand, bamboo, productive beds, trees, shelters, narrow paths, small plazas and surfaces of different textures. Its principal content is not a collection of separate play structures but the relationship among plants, materials, climate and movement.

The entrance creates a transition from the wider botanic gardens into a more contained environment. Low walls, dense planting and changes of scale define a recognisable precinct without completely isolating it from the larger landscape.

Paths curve through planting and produce partial discoveries. Some routes cross open areas; others pass beneath branches, among bamboo or beside water. Circulation allows the garden to be read as a sequence rather than a single view.

Water appears in channels, fountains, pools and splash areas. Its movement reveals flow, reflection, temperature and changes of texture across stone, timber and soil. Water also creates habitats for plants and invertebrates.

Sand introduces a transformable material. It can be piled, mixed with water or moved by hand and tools. Its behaviour shows directly how moisture and pressure alter a granular material.

Bamboo forms one of the most recognisable environments. Vertical stems, fine leaves and sounds produced by wind create an atmosphere different from that of broad-canopied trees. Density changes light, depth and orientation.

Productive gardens show edible plants, herbs and cultivation cycles. Leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds reveal how plants change through the year and how different species produce food through very different structures.

Sensory planting uses scent, texture and colour. Soft leaves, rough surfaces, fragrant flowers and stems of different forms turn botanical observation into a multisensory experience.

Trees provide shade and vertical structure. Trunks, roots and crowns organise small areas of pause and create changes in temperature. Filtered light draws moving patterns across paths and water.

Visible roots show how plants anchor themselves and seek moisture. Their presence adds relief and connects the aerial part of the garden with processes usually hidden beneath the ground.

Shelters and small structures create spaces at reduced scale. Timber, branches, stone and vegetation form open interiors in which architecture blends with the garden.

Changes of level introduce slopes, steps and small viewpoints. Topography allows vegetation to be observed from different heights and makes one plant visible from ground, stem or lower canopy.

The garden was designed so that the entire environment, rather than a single piece of equipment, works as the field of discovery. Waterways, bamboo, sand, planted tunnels, productive beds and small clearings are arranged to make botanical differences perceptible through movement. The result is a compact landscape in which enclosure and openness alternate repeatedly, giving close-up views of stems, leaves, soil and water before reconnecting with the wider Melbourne Gardens.

Rain transforms the precinct strongly. It darkens timber and soil, increases water flow and forms droplets on leaves. Plant scents intensify and surfaces become more reflective.

Seasons change flowering, leaf density, fruit and colour. The garden never retains a completely fixed image and acts as a living record of Melbourne’s climate. Changes in moisture, flowering and leaf cover continually alter the relationship between planted tunnels, water, sand and open clearings.

Its relationship with Royal Botanic Gardens is essential. The children’s precinct belongs to a larger botanical institution and shares its plant diversity, conservation practice and historic landscape.

Signs and interpretive elements introduce names, processes and relationships without turning the garden into an enclosed exhibition. Information remains connected with visible plants and materials.

The alternation between open spaces and planted corners changes the perception of scale. In some sections the sky dominates; in others, leaves, stems and branches form a nearby ceiling that concentrates sound, shade and humidity.
