Centennial Parklands occupies a large area east of central Sydney and combines lawns, lakes, wetlands, tree-lined avenues and sporting spaces. Its scale turns the precinct into a metropolitan landscape where biodiversity, recreation and civic memory remain connected.

Lakes organise much of the terrain. Water, reflection, reeds and banks attract birds and smaller organisms and contrast with the open lawns.

Mature trees provide shade and monumentality. Trunks, roots and crowns record decades of growth and divide the landscape into areas of different atmosphere.

Lawns form broad continuous surfaces. Their openness makes sky, vegetation and urban movement visible in one perspective.

Wetlands perform ecological and water-management functions. Emergent plants, mud and shallow surfaces support insects, birds and amphibians.

Avenues and paths structure movement. Curves, axes and connections support walking, cycling and equestrian use and reveal the true scale of the grounds.

Urban wildlife uses water, trees and grass. Waterbirds, bats, insects and other groups form an active ecological network within the city.

The park also preserves ceremonial and civic memory. Its history is connected with celebrations, public gatherings and the construction of a shared landscape for Sydney.

The relationship with Gadigal and Bidjigal Country adds a fundamental dimension. The land holds cultural history far older than its design as a colonial park.

Centennial Parklands is defined by the union of water, lawn and canopy. Lakes, wetlands, avenues, wildlife and public memory form an inseparable whole. Its distinctive quality lies in maintaining a landscape of exceptional scale where ecology, daily life and civic representation share the same space.
