SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium occupies a building beside the Yarra River and presents aquatic ecosystems through tanks, tunnels, pools and temperature-controlled habitats. Penguins, rays, sharks, reef fish and Southern Ocean species appear within a route connecting anatomy, movement, feeding and conservation with very different marine and freshwater environments. Large tanks create landscapes of several depths. Rock, sand, current and open water provide shelter and movement routes for species with different requirements. Their scale makes it possible to see how animals distribute themselves across the bottom, water column and areas close to the surface.

Tunnels transform the viewpoint. Fish, rays and sharks pass above and beside the visitor, making the full form of the body visible during swimming. Curved glazing widens the field of vision and turns the water into an enveloping space.

Sharks display streamlined anatomy. Fins, tail, mouth position and body shape reflect movement and feeding strategies developed in open ocean, reef and coastal water. Continuous swimming reveals how balance and propulsion depend on several parts of the body working together.
