Melbourne Zoo occupies broad wooded grounds in Parkville and presents species from several continents within gardens established in the nineteenth century. Naturalistic habitats, paths, aviaries, lakes and breeding programmes reveal the institution’s shift from zoological display toward a model based on welfare, education, research and conservation. Mature planting turns the precinct into a historic landscape in which wildlife and botany share visual importance.

Large mammals introduce major differences of size, movement and behaviour. Giraffes, big cats, primates and other herbivores reveal anatomy adapted to very different habitats and ways of life. Comparison between bodies shows how feeding, locomotion and social organisation shape every species.

Primates display hands, forward-facing vision and complex social relationships. Platforms, ropes, trunks and shelters create vertical and horizontal routes. Group observation reveals play, hierarchy, care, communication and problem-solving.

Big cats combine strength, stealth and long periods of rest. Claws, muscle, jaws and coat patterns respond to hunting, camouflage and thermal regulation. The way they use shade, height and shelter reveals territorial behaviour and strategies of observation.

Giraffes have a distinctive relationship with height and feeding. Long necks, tongues and legs make resources beyond the reach of other herbivores accessible. Drinking and walking require changes of posture that expose the coordination of a body with extreme proportions.

Grassland animals use open ground, water and shade. Distance between individuals, group formation and shared access to resources reveal relationships that cannot be understood through one isolated animal.

Habitats use water, rock, trunks, planting and shelter. The ability to withdraw, change level and select microenvironments contributes to welfare and observable behaviour. Design aims to provide choice rather than construct one fixed scene.

Organisation by biogeographic region connects species with landscapes. Rainforest, savanna, wetland and woodland appear through planting, water and architecture of different scales. These transitions allow organisms to be compared within wider ecological contexts.

Historic gardens add mature trees, older alignments and a landscape identity of their own. Planting provides shade, divides sectors and preserves part of the zoo’s original structure. Trunks, roots and crowns record decades of growth and support urban wildlife.

Lakes and wet areas add reflection, temperature variation and biodiversity. Birds, insects and aquatic plants use the banks and shallow surfaces. Water also organises views and separates some habitats visually.
