Healesville Sanctuary occupies a broad wooded site in the Yarra Valley and is devoted to Australian wildlife. Koalas occupy raised branches and platforms among eucalyptus. Curved claws, opposing digits and a compact body reveal an anatomy adapted to arboreal life. Their specialised diet shapes long periods of rest and the selection of leaves.
Kangaroos and wallabies use open areas containing natural ground, grass, shade and low vegetation. Powerful hind limbs, tail and hopping movement reveal adaptations to travel across distance. Differences in size between species make proportions and posture easy to compare.
Wombats occupy habitats with earth, burrows and shelters. Their low, powerful body is adapted to digging. Limbs, claws and musculature reveal a strong relationship with the ground and with thermal regulation below the surface.
The platypus appears in aquatic environments with controlled light, current and submerged areas. A sensitive bill, webbed feet and streamlined body allow it to search for food on the bottom. Viewing windows reveal rapid changes of direction and swimming very different from movement on land.
Echidnas represent another monotreme lineage. Spines, an elongated snout and digging limbs reveal adaptations to searching for ants and termites. The body combines protection, smell and strength in a form unlike that of other Australian mammals.
Tasmanian devils use habitats with natural ground, trunks and shelters. Strong jaws, compact bodies and intense activity relate to scavenging and territorial behaviour. Conservation programmes connect these animals with populations affected by disease.

Amphibians require stable humidity. Pools, aquatic plants and protected zones support species sensitive to changes in water and temperature. Their calls add a seasonal acoustic layer.
The Australian Wildlife Health Centre is one of the sanctuary’s most distinctive working facilities. Veterinary treatment, diagnostics, rehabilitation and wildlife care occur within a building that links the animal collection with rescue work beyond the sanctuary boundaries. Public viewing areas reveal part of this clinical infrastructure and make visible the transition from emergency treatment to recovery, while laboratories, examination rooms and specialist equipment show that conservation here also depends on medicine and long-term health records.
The wildlife hospital and veterinary areas form an essential part of the institution. Consulting rooms, laboratories, quarantine and recovery spaces allow injured or sick animals to be treated and connect the sanctuary with rescue and rehabilitation.
Feeding depends on specialised kitchens and stores. Leaves, meat, insects, vegetables and supplements are prepared according to species, age and health.
Enrichment introduces branches, scents, hidden food, objects and changes in arrangement. These variations encourage exploration and reveal how each species uses different senses and abilities.
Breeding programmes coordinate genetics, behaviour and social compatibility. Records of lineages and births connect individual animals with long-term conservation goals.
