David Fleay Wildlife Park occupies a wooded setting beside Tallebudgera Creek in southern Gold Coast and presents Australian wildlife within habitats integrated with subtropical vegetation, wetlands and raised walkways. The park takes its name from naturalist David Fleay and preserves a tradition of observing, caring for and breeding native species. Its scale and landscape create an experience different from that of a large urban zoo: animals appear among trees, water, shade and discreet structures.

Paths pass through dense vegetation of eucalyptus, palms, ferns, vines and riverside plants. Light filters through the canopy and changes in intensity according to tree cover. Boardwalks, bridges and paths connect habitats without removing the sense of woodland.

Koalas occupy habitats with branches, platforms and eucalyptus. Curved claws, opposing digits and posture reveal an anatomy adapted to arboreal life. Leaf selection and long periods of rest reflect a low-energy diet and a high degree of chemical specialisation.

Dingoes use broad habitats with natural ground, vegetation, shelters and routes marked by movement. Ears, smell, musculature and social behaviour reveal a canid closely connected with varied Australian landscapes.

The platypus appears in an aquatic environment with controlled light. Its sensitive bill, webbed feet and streamlined body allow it to explore the bottom and capture small organisms. Lower viewing windows reveal fast swimming and rapid changes of direction underwater.

Crocodiles occupy lagoons, banks and resting surfaces. Eyes and nostrils positioned on the upper part of the head allow them to remain almost submerged. Tail, skin and jaw reveal an anatomy adapted to waiting and to sudden movement.

Birds of prey form one of the most prominent groups. Eagles, falcons, owls and other species display curved beaks, strong talons and specialised vision. Perches, flight spaces and shaded areas allow differences in posture, balance and activity to be observed.

Owls introduce nocturnal adaptations. Large eyes, facial discs and silent plumage reveal strategies for hunting and orientation in low light. Darkened habitats allow behaviour rarely visible in full daylight to be observed.

Woodland and wetland birds add colour and sound. Parrots, kingfishers, ducks and other species use branches, water and vegetation. Beaks, feet and plumage reveal different relationships with seeds, fish, insects and fruit.

Nocturnal marsupials occupy spaces containing trunks, cavities, nets and reduced light. Gliders, small mammals and other species use several levels and show how membranes, tails and eyes respond to life among trees.

Reptiles appear in terrariums containing rock, sand, branches and water. Snakes, lizards and turtles depend on thermal gradients. Heated surfaces and shelters allow body temperature to be regulated and activity to alternate with rest.

Wetlands form an essential part of the landscape. Ponds, channels, reeds and muddy banks support birds, amphibians, insects and fish. Water adds reflection, sound and changes of humidity to the route.

Tallebudgera Creek connects the park with a wider river and coastal system. Riverside vegetation, mangroves and waterbirds show that the site is not isolated from its natural surroundings.

Interpretive panels connect each species with distribution, feeding, behaviour and conservation. The material emphasises David Fleay’s role in studying and breeding Australian wildlife and shows how scientific observation can transform animal care.

Habitats use discreet barriers, glass, mesh and differences in level. Vegetation reduces the visual presence of infrastructure and maintains continuity between enclosure and woodland.

Daily care depends on kitchens, clinics, stores and handling areas. Diets, enrichment, observation and treatment are adapted to each species. Hidden food, branches, scents and changes in the environment encourage exploration and behaviour.

Breeding and conservation connect the park’s animals with regional programmes and wild populations. Records of health, genetics and behaviour form a scientific infrastructure less visible than the habitats.

The park’s focus on Queensland native fauna gives the collection a strong regional identity. Alongside familiar species such as koalas and kangaroos, threatened or less frequently seen animals place greater emphasis on conservation status, habitat requirements and the ecological diversity of the state. This balance between iconic and uncommon species reflects the park’s continuing role within Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.

Light, rain and humidity transform the landscape. After rain, leaves, bark and paths take on deeper tones; during dry periods, soil and vegetation show different textures. The subtropical climate remains constantly present.

David Fleay Wildlife Park is defined by the union of Australian wildlife, forest and wetland. Koalas, dingoes, platypuses, crocodiles, raptors, marsupials, reptiles, boardwalks and Tallebudgera Creek form an inseparable whole. Its singularity lies in presenting native species within a landscape closely connected with vegetation and water while keeping visible the continuity among conservation, natural history and subtropical environment.
