Yerevan Zoo occupies spacious wooded grounds on a slope beside Myasnikyan Avenue and brings together mammals, birds and reptiles from different regions. Paths, changes of level, planted areas and viewing spaces connect the animals with a large urban landscape. The gradient and vegetation give every sector a different atmosphere and prevent the collection from feeling like a completely uniform sequence of enclosures.

Mammals introduce major differences of size, movement and behaviour. Herbivores, predators and smaller species reveal body forms adapted to running, climbing, digging or remaining at rest for long periods.

Limbs make strategies of movement comparable. Hooves, claws, pads and joints respond to different ground, speed and ways of life. Close observation reveals details that in the wild would be separated by great distances.

Teeth and head form reveal feeding habits. Powerful jaws, cutting teeth or grinding surfaces show how each species processes food and how this function influences the entire anatomy.

Primates introduce vertical movement and social behaviour. Ropes, platforms, trunks and elevated structures make grip, jumping, balance and communication within the group visible. Hands, feet and tails perform different functions according to species and type of movement.

Large cats and other carnivores have another relationship with space. Shade, shelters, platforms and visual boundaries allow alternation among rest, observation and repeated routes. Muscular structure, claws and posture reveal adaptations connected with stalking, speed and territorial control.

Hoofed mammals occupy more open areas where movement spreads horizontally. Long legs, hooves, necks and horns respond to grassland, mountain or savannah environments. Comparing them reveals different ways of walking, running and feeding.

Birds add colour, flight and sound. Beaks, feet, wings and plumage reveal specialisation for feeding, aquatic life, running or the use of branches and elevated platforms.

Birds of prey introduce talons, vision and forms of flight associated with hunting. Their posture and the structure of wing and beak distinguish them from seed-eating or water birds.

Reptiles have another relationship with temperature and movement. Scales, elongated bodies, short limbs or shells reveal strategies very different from those of mammals and birds. Their activity depends especially on thermal conditions.

Enclosures use rock, earth, water, trunks and artificial structures. Their arrangement provides surfaces for rest, shelter and movement and creates backgrounds against which body form can be observed in relation to environment.

Aquatic areas introduce reflection and another type of movement. Ponds, wet edges and pools reveal swimming, rest and feeding among species connected with water.

Trees form an essential part of the landscape. Their crowns provide shade, divide the ground and reduce the visual presence of buildings and paths. Planting also attracts urban birds, insects and other organisms outside the managed collection.

The slope organises circulation through climbs, descents and changing perspectives. Elevated areas reveal several enclosures and parts of the city, while lower sectors become more enclosed by vegetation and walls.

Paths connect enclosures of different scales. Paving, earth and sitting areas adapt to the relief and make the breadth of the site visible. Distance between zones contributes to the perception of the zoo as a park as well as a zoological institution.

Retaining walls and drainage systems reveal how the grounds adapt to the hillside. Slopes, channels and stabilised edges carry rainwater away and protect paths and habitats from erosion and mud accumulation.

Interpretive panels connect every species with distribution, diet, behaviour and conservation. Maps, images and text place animals within wider ecosystems and threats.

Conservation appears through species histories, breeding under human care and habitat protection. Direct observation is therefore connected with habitat loss, wildlife trafficking and environmental change.

Service and animal-care facilities remain partly outside public view but are essential. Feeding, veterinary care, cleaning and monitoring sustain every enclosure and show that a zoological collection depends on continuous technical work.

Indoor shelters and handling areas respond to Yerevan’s continental climate. Walls, doors, heating and protected spaces make it possible to separate animals temporarily, control temperature and provide veterinary care during periods of severe cold.

Light changes animal activity and appearance. Sun emphasises fur, feathers and scales; shade reduces contrast; temperature alters rest, movement and use of shelter.

Yerevan Zoo is defined by the union of wildlife, relief and wooded landscape. Mammals, birds, reptiles, paths, enclosures and vegetation form an inseparable whole. Its distinctive quality lies in distributing the collection across an urban hillside and in allowing anatomy, behaviour and conservation to be read within a living park rather than only through a series of cases or cages.
