Yerevan Botanical Garden occupies an extensive site in the northeast of the capital and brings together plant collections, woodland, paths and research plots. Its scale distinguishes it from a compact ornamental garden: the landscape changes among densely planted sectors, open ground, scientific areas and long routes where species appear as communities rather than isolated specimens.

Armenian flora forms one of the principal cores. Trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants represent mountain, valley, woodland and steppe environments. The proximity of species from different regions makes it possible to observe how form, leaf, bark and growth respond to variations in altitude, moisture and temperature.

Tree collections create the vertical structure of the garden. Broad crowns, conifers, straight trunks and branching forms produce shaded areas and clearings. Differences in height and density give every sector a distinct atmosphere.

Bark provides a diversity less immediate than flowering. Smooth, rough, fissured or scaled surfaces change with age and moisture. Grey, brown, reddish and pale tones make species recognisable even after their leaves have fallen.

Conifers retain a constant presence throughout the year. Needles, cones and vertical profiles contrast with deciduous trees that completely change appearance between summer and winter. Their coexistence reveals different plant strategies for cold and water loss.

Shrubs occupy edges, understorey and specialised plots. Compact forms, low branches and flowering cycles add layers between trees and ground. Some species produce fruit supporting birds and insects during particular periods.

Herbaceous plants introduce a closer scale. Flowers, stems, seeds and leaves change quickly and record the rhythm of the seasons. Their presence may concentrate within brief periods, later leaving dry structures or apparently empty ground.

Introduced species extend the garden toward other biogeographical regions. Plants from Europe, Asia and elsewhere make adaptation and growth under Yerevan’s continental climate comparable. Their survival depends on the relationship among origin, soil, irrigation and exposure.

Scientific plots show that the garden does not function only as a park. Labels, groupings, nurseries and study areas turn vegetation into a documented collection. Every specimen can be connected with provenance, classification and long-term monitoring.

Paths organise movement through axes, curves and branches. Some cross dense woodland; others border clearings and plots. Distance between sectors makes the landscape appear gradually and makes transitions among plant communities perceptible.

The ground changes among compacted earth, gravel, leaves and wetter surfaces. Roots, seeds, bark and organic matter form a layer containing much of the biological activity. Fungi, insects and smaller organisms participate in decomposition and renewal.

Birds use crowns, shrubs and open areas. Their flight, calls and movement connect the different levels of the garden. Plant variety provides food, shelter and nesting places within a densely built city.

Light transforms the site throughout the day. Clearings receive direct sun and strong contrast; beneath the crowns, green shade and lower temperatures predominate. Cloud brings the tones closer together and makes the textures of trunks and leaves stand out differently.

The seasons produce profound change. Spring concentrates new growth and flowering; summer increases canopy density; autumn introduces yellow, ochre and red; winter exposes branch architecture while conifers retain their green.

Yerevan’s climate shapes the collections. Dry summers, cold winters and marked variation require plants to respond through dormancy, deep roots, resistant leaves or short cycles. The garden turns these adaptations into an observable landscape.

Nursery and propagation areas reveal another part of the scientific work. Seeds, cuttings and young plants are cultivated before entering the wider collections, connecting research, renewal and long-term maintenance.

Irrigation, drainage and soil protection form a discreet infrastructure. Channels, pipes, edging and mulched surfaces distribute water and reduce moisture loss during dry summers.

Reproductive structures add another seasonal layer. Cones, fruits, seed heads and capsules appear at different times and make visible the processes through which the collections renew themselves.

Long-term records connect individual specimens with changes in temperature, rainfall and growth. Repeated measurements turn the garden into an archive of how plants respond to the continental climate of Yerevan across decades.
