The State Museum of Nature of Armenia brings together collections devoted to the country’s geology, flora, fauna and ecosystems. Minerals, rocks, fossils, herbarium material, insects, birds, mammals and reconstructed environments present a territory marked by major differences in altitude, climate and relief. The galleries connect preserved specimens with mountains, forests, steppe, wetlands and valleys, so every object appears as part of a wider natural system.

Geology forms the foundation of the narrative. Armenia occupies a volcanic and mountainous region where lava, tuff, basalt and other rocks shaped the terrain. Samples make colour, grain, hardness and origin comparable. Porous surfaces, crystals, fractures and layers reveal processes of cooling, pressure, erosion and sedimentation developed over immense periods.

Minerals introduce a more precise scale. Crystal forms, metallic lustre, transparency and intense colour reveal ordered internal structures. Some specimens are associated with veins and deposits, while others show how small chemical differences produce changing properties. The collection connects visual appearance with composition and geological formation.

Fossils provide evidence of vanished organisms and environments. Shells, plant impressions, bones and preserved fragments make ancient seas, climatic shifts and transformations of life imaginable. Their presence shows that the current landscape represents only one stage in a much longer history.

Botany is presented through herbarium sheets, seeds, fruits, timber samples and models. Plants are grouped by family, habitat or region and reveal adaptation to drought, cold, shade and different soils. Narrow leaves, deep roots, thick bark and short life cycles record strategies developed in response to specific environmental conditions.

Armenian woodland appears as a layered community. Trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, fungi and soil organisms occupy related levels. The displays show that a forest is not merely a group of trunks, but a network of light, moisture, food and decomposition.

Steppe introduces another landscape. Grasses, low plants, reptiles, rodents and birds adapt to open ground, wind and sharp temperature variation. Dry tones and horizontal scale contrast with forest density and reveal ecological diversity across relatively short distances.

Alpine zones are connected with altitude, snow and brief growing seasons. Compact plants, mountain mammals and specialised birds respond to cold, slope and limited shelter. Models and preserved specimens reveal body forms and coverings adapted to these conditions.

Wetlands and Lake Sevan add an aquatic dimension. Fish, birds, amphibians, molluscs and waterside plants form communities dependent on water quality, seasonal levels and breeding grounds. The museum connects the lake with rivers, springs and wider catchments.

Birds form one of the most visually prominent groups. Beaks, legs, wings and plumage change according to feeding, flight and habitat. Raptors, waterbirds, forest species and field birds show how anatomy responds to different functions.

Mammals introduce variation in size, coat and behaviour. Carnivores, herbivores, rodents and bats occupy separate ecological niches. Preserved specimens allow teeth, limbs, claws and body proportions to be compared directly.

Insects reveal diversity at a small scale. Butterflies, beetles, hymenoptera and other groups display highly varied colours, forms and reproductive strategies. Wings, antennae, jaws and exoskeletons show precise anatomical solutions.

Reptiles and amphibians connect temperature, moisture and reproduction. Scales, permeable skin, eggs and metamorphosis respond to different surroundings. Their distribution reveals the importance of microhabitats such as sunlit rocks, pools and river edges.

Food chains organise relationships among species. Plants, herbivores, predators and decomposers create flows of energy and matter. Diagrams and dioramas show that changes in one population can affect many others.

Conservation appears through threatened species, habitat change and human pressure. Urbanisation, mining, pollution, hunting and water alteration transform ecosystems. Historical specimens allow earlier distributions to be compared with current conditions.

Taxidermy and scientific preparation form part of the museum’s work. Skins, skeletons, plant samples and minerals require different methods of stabilisation, labelling and storage. Every specimen retains information about place, date and collecting conditions.

Dioramas combine painted backgrounds, vegetation, rock and animals to reconstruct environments. Lighting and scale relate species that would lose their context in separate cases. These scenes turn classification into landscape.

Storage and conservation areas extend the scientific collection beyond public galleries. Cabinets, boxes, climate control and catalogues preserve fragile material and allow specimens collected at different times to remain comparable.

The State Museum of Nature of Armenia is defined by the union of object, territory and process. Rocks, plants, animals, fossils and ecosystems form an archive of the country’s natural diversity.
