Costanera Norte Ecological Reserve occupies a riverside strip between the University of Buenos Aires campus and the Río de la Plata. Wetlands, grassland, scrub and shoreline vegetation developed across ground transformed by landfill, sediment and river dynamics. The landscape is not isolated from the city, but forms a metropolitan edge where infrastructure, plant colonisation and water remain visible at the same time.

The proximity of the university buildings is one of its most distinctive features. Large concrete volumes, roads and technical structures appear behind reeds, trees and lagoons. The reserve brings radically different scales together within a compact area.

Wetlands form the ecological core. Shallow water, mud, emergent vegetation and seasonal variation create habitats supporting insects, fish, amphibians and birds. Water levels change with rainfall, wind and fluctuations in the Río de la Plata.

Reed beds create dense vertical masses. Stems, leaves and roots retain sediment, reduce water movement and provide shelter. Their colour changes from intense green to ochre and brown according to season and plant condition.

Grassland occupies drier and more exposed sectors. Grasses and herbaceous plants form open surfaces where wind becomes especially visible. These environments support insects, pollinators and small birds using stems and seeds.

Scrub introduces greater density. Shrubs, climbers and young trees form edges between grassland and wetland and provide food and shelter. Plant succession shows how altered ground can change over time through spontaneous colonisation.

Birds are among the most visible elements. Herons, coots, ducks, raptors and smaller species use water, mud, reeds and crowns. Their movements connect the reserve with other wetlands along the Río de la Plata corridor.

Insects sustain much of the ecological activity. Dragonflies, butterflies, beetles and pollinators appear around water and flowers. Their presence links plants, birds, amphibians and decomposition cycles.

Amphibians depend on wet and temporary sectors. Their activity changes with temperature and rainfall, and their calls form part of the atmosphere during particular periods. Small water bodies provide places for reproduction and development.

Paths cross environments of different density. Open sections provide broad views toward the river and city, while others become enclosed by vegetation. The surface changes among earth, gravel, mud and consolidated ground according to moisture and maintenance.

Viewpoints concentrate perspectives across lagoons, reed beds and shore. From some positions, the university buildings dominate; from others, the Río de la Plata and sky occupy almost the entire horizon. This alternation defines the visual identity of the reserve.

The shore remains subject to erosion, deposition and changing water levels. Mud, branches, natural debris and sediment record each episode. The edge is not a fixed line, but a surface continually reorganised by river processes.

The nearby airport and flight paths add a visual and acoustic dimension. Aircraft cross the sky above wetlands and birds, reinforcing the overlap between urban nature and metropolitan infrastructure.

Light profoundly changes the landscape. Sun creates reflections across the water and backlighting in the reeds; cloud brings river and sky closer in tone; late in the day, buildings and vegetation form overlapping silhouettes.

The reserve shows that urban biodiversity can develop on residual and transformed land. Its value depends on the interaction of hydrology, natural colonisation and later protection rather than on uninterrupted survival of an earlier landscape.

Seasonal changes alter the balance among water, grassland and reed beds. Summer growth increases density and shade, while cooler months expose more of the underlying ground and make the structure of wetlands easier to read.

Research and environmental education add another layer. The proximity of the university makes the reserve a natural setting for observation of hydrology, vegetation, birdlife and ecological succession within a highly urbanised context.

The reserve also records the interaction between planned infrastructure and spontaneous ecological development. Drainage, embankments, fill and former construction areas created the physical conditions on which wetland and grassland communities later established themselves, so the present habitat preserves traces of both engineering and succession.

Small variations in elevation are ecologically important. Slightly higher ground remains drier and favours grass or scrub, while lower depressions retain water and support reeds and aquatic species. These subtle differences create a patchwork of habitats across a relatively flat riverside site.

Costanera Norte Ecological Reserve is defined by the union of campus, wetland and river. Reed beds, grassland, birds, paths, buildings and river horizon form an inseparable whole. Its distinctive quality lies in showing how natural processes rebuild habitat within one of the most infrastructural edges of Buenos Aires.
