The ARA Presidente Sarmiento remains moored in Dock 3 of Puerto Madero as one of Buenos Aires’ most distinctive floating museums. Built in the late nineteenth century as a training ship for the Argentine Navy, it preserves decks, cabins, instruments, machinery and collections connected with its voyages. The vessel makes it possible to read naval architecture, the technological transition between sail and steam, and the daily life of cadets and crews during long passages at the same time.
The exterior is dominated by the elongated hull, masts, rigging, funnels and a dense array of fittings. These elements reveal the hybrid character of the ship. Sail could use the wind, while the steam engine provided movement independent of atmospheric conditions. The coexistence of both systems places the frigate within a decisive stage of naval history.
The masts organise a complex vertical network. Ropes, blocks, yards and tensioning systems turned wind into propulsion and required precise coordination. The rigging is not decorative: every line answered to a particular manoeuvre and to tasks forming part of cadet training.
The main deck contains hatches, capstans, ventilators, bollards and manoeuvring equipment. Its routes had to allow many people to work simultaneously without interrupting operations. Timber, metal and paint preserve surfaces exposed to salt, humidity, load and constant maintenance.
Below deck, the space becomes more compact. Narrow corridors, steep stairs and restrained doorways connect cabins, dining rooms, stores and service areas. The arrangement makes naval hierarchy visible: officers, cadets and crew occupied different spaces within a structure where every metre had a function.
The cabins retain bunks, furniture, desks and personal objects. Their scale reveals the limitations of life on board and the need to organise luggage, rest and work inside small compartments. Proximity among people, noise and movement belonged to everyday experience.
Ceremonial rooms have a different material character. Polished timber, furniture, textiles, metal and diplomatic objects create more representative interiors. Their contrast with technical rooms and accommodation shows that the vessel was simultaneously school, machine, residence and symbol of the Argentine state.
Navigation instruments form a central part of the collection. Compasses, sextants, chronometers, charts, rules and communication equipment explain how position, course and time were calculated before digital systems. Brass, glass and wood preserve the craftsmanship required for precise work under changing maritime conditions.
Nautical charts turned coasts, depths, currents and hazards into graphic information. Their use required astronomical observation, calculation and continuous recording. Training did not consist only of memorising routes, but of interpreting evidence and correcting navigation as wind, sea and visibility changed.
The engine room introduces an industrial landscape. Boilers, pipes, valves, gauges and mechanical components reveal the energy required to move the vessel and sustain its systems. Heat, noise and pressure made this sector very different from the open deck.
Propulsion required fuel, water and maintenance. Every component had to be inspected and any failure could affect autonomy. The machinery shows that modern navigation depended as much on mechanical knowledge as on sailing traditions.
The ship’s training voyages connected Argentina with ports across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Long-distance navigation exposed cadets to changing weather, languages, diplomatic protocol and unfamiliar port infrastructures. The route history therefore expands the vessel beyond a national naval story and places it within a global network of maritime education.
Collections gathered during those voyages preserve photographs, flags, gifts, uniforms and documents from international calls. These objects record both official encounters and the ship’s role as a floating representation of Argentina abroad.
Cadet training developed through routines, watches, manoeuvres, lessons and practical work. Navigation placed knowledge under real conditions of wind, swell, fatigue and shared life. The surviving spaces show that discipline was written into the organisation of the vessel itself.
Maintenance remains central even after the ship ceased active service. Timber decks, steel fittings, rigging and enclosed machinery respond differently to humidity, corrosion and weather. Preserving a floating museum requires continuous intervention across materials originally designed for operation rather than static display.
Puerto Madero provides an urban context of strong contrast. Former warehouses, docks, bridges and contemporary towers surround a ship connected with the port history that shaped the district. The still water reflects masts and façades and links naval memory with urban transformation.
