Bici Lab Andorra occupies around 1,700 square metres in central Andorra la Vella and is devoted entirely to the bicycle as a technical object, means of transport, sporting instrument and piece of material culture. The museum grew from the Riberaygua collection, begun around 1970 by Bonaventura Riberaygua and continued by later generations of the family. The holdings now include more than 300 bicycles together with roughly one hundred original advertising posters for bicycles and components.

The permanent exhibition traces the development of the bicycle from 1817 to contemporary models. It begins with early foot-powered machines that predate pedals and chain transmission, then follows the gradual emergence of increasingly efficient solutions for steering, balance, propulsion and braking.

Historic examples show that the familiar modern bicycle was the result of repeated experimentation. Draisine-type machines, velocipedes, tricycles, high-wheel bicycles and transitional designs allow visitors to compare radically different wheel diameters, rigid frames, elevated riding positions and transmission systems that still differed greatly from the modern pattern. The sequence turns the gallery into a physical chronology of cycling engineering.

Materials form another major theme. Steel dominates much of the bicycle’s history and appears in tubes, welded joints, forks and components from many periods. Later sections introduce aluminium, titanium, composite materials and carbon fibre, all used to reduce weight or alter stiffness. Tube profiles, joints and frame geometry show how structural design can change dramatically while preserving the basic idea of two aligned wheels.

Transmission systems provide a particularly clear technical story. Cranks, chainrings, chains, sprockets and gear mechanisms explain how muscular effort is transferred to the rear wheel. Comparing older mechanisms with contemporary drivetrains reveals a progression from simple and relatively heavy solutions to highly precise systems with multiple ratios and increasingly integrated controls.

Brakes and wheels add another mechanical layer. Rims, spokes, hubs, tyres and braking systems reflect the demands of different periods and disciplines. A city bicycle, a road-racing machine and a mountain bike respond differently to weight, speed, surface conditions and the need for controlled stopping.

The museum displays touring bicycles, children’s bicycles, racing machines, mountain bikes and less common types. Historic examples are associated with manufacturers and technical traditions from several countries, ranging from late nineteenth-century European machines to bicycles made for large Asian markets. This diversity presents the bicycle as a global industrial product rather than only as a sporting object.

Competitive cycling occupies an important part of the narrative. Bicycles, clothing, race imagery and documents show how the pursuit of speed changed geometry, aerodynamics and weight. The differences between a road bicycle, a time-trial machine and a mountain bike demonstrate how specialised design became as disciplines developed.

Andorra is integrated into the exhibition through its mountain roads, passes, competitions and contemporary cycling culture. Simulators, touchscreens and virtual-reality experiences connect the displayed objects with physical effort and terrain. Some installations reproduce sensations associated with descent or allow visitors to explore route-related information, so the museum does not rely entirely on static objects.

Gallery design uses the circular forms of wheels and gears as recurring visual devices. Some bicycles are suspended, others aligned in sequences or isolated against restrained backgrounds. Lighting emphasises silhouettes, frame structures and components, making mechanical details easier to examine than they would be in a densely packed collection store.

The original posters add a parallel visual history. Typography, illustration and advertising composition document how bicycle, tyre and component manufacturers associated cycling with speed, modernity and personal freedom. These graphic works also record changes in printing techniques and commercial visual language across different decades.

Bici Lab combines its permanent display with temporary exhibitions that widen the interpretation toward social, economic and cultural subjects. The bicycle appears in relation to work, delivery services, industry, urban mobility, health and environmental change. This broader approach prevents the museum from becoming a simple chronological row of old machines.

Digital interpretation supports rather than replaces the original collection. Screens and simulators appear beside historic bicycles, mechanical parts, photographs and documents. The contrast between wood, steel, rubber, aluminium, carbon fibre and digital surfaces condenses two centuries of changing materials and technologies into one setting.

The museum also presents the bicycle as a continuing field of innovation. Electric assistance, embedded electronics, new composites and changing mobility patterns extend a technical history that remains open rather than complete. The bicycle is treated as a platform that continues to adapt to sporting, environmental and social needs.

Bici Lab’s distinctive strength lies in transforming a large family collection into a broad interpretation of bicycle engineering and culture. More than 300 machines, historic posters, components, simulators and audiovisual resources make it possible to study how balance, energy transmission, design, mobility and cycling culture have evolved from the first nineteenth-century experiments to present-day bicycles.
