Tirana

Tirana brings together monumental squares, mosques, former bunkers, colourful façades, markets and rapidly changing districts beneath Mount Dajti. Skanderbeg Square, Bunk’Art, Blloku and Pazari i Ri reveal a capital where Ottoman heritage, monarchy, communist dictatorship, democratic transition and urban expansion remain deeply intertwined.

Tirana: a capital of colour, political memory and Balkan energy

Tirana extends beneath Mount Dajti through broad avenues, residential districts, squares, parks and buildings from very different periods. The city was a small Ottoman town before becoming Albania's capital in 1920. During the twentieth century it passed through monarchy, occupation, communist dictatorship and a democratic transition that rapidly transformed its form and urban culture.
